Early Genius

It is well known that Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart showed early genius at age five when he composed what we know as “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star” or the “Alphabet Song.” Tennyson, too, showed early genius. He wrote a six-thousand-line epic poem when he was only twelve years old. He published a book of poems in 1827 when he was eighteen, and in 1830 and 1832. These last two volumes were harshly criticized as was the custom of critics at the time. But he took it personally and did not publish again for nine years. By 1850, he was one of Britain’s most popular poets. He went on to write Idylls of the King and became Poet Laureate. He died at age eighty-three and is buried in Poet’s Corner at Westminster Abbey in London.
